The BC Government has released the final report from the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in BC. CBABC is pleased to see the Commissioner adopt many of our recommendations, which include maintaining independent regulation of lawyers, protecting solicitor-client privilege, increasing education through LSBC to prevent money laundering, and funding additional resources for police investigations on suspected money laundering. The 1,831-page report contains 101 recommendations developed over three years, during which time the Commissioner heard from almost 200 witnesses and experts.
CBABC participated in the Commission to represent the interests of lawyers and uphold Solicitor-client privilege. We recognize the importance for clients to have full confidentiality in order to provide their lawyers with all necessary information and receive complete advice. CBABC continues to stand against money-laundering and is committed to working with government and the Law Society of BC to implement recommended changes.
