The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada has responded to our submission urging the federal government to appoint justices to the BC Supreme Court and to re-establish the Judicial Advisory Committee in British Columbia.
In his letter, the Minister aligned with our commitment to appoint qualified judges of diverse backgrounds and expertise to the judiciary. He noted that the Ministry is continuing to improve the appointment process and appreciates CBABC’s suggestions. Also highlighted was the reconstitution of the British Columbia Judicial Advisory Committee and the extension of appointees’ terms to help facilitate a timely judicial appointment process.
We are pleased to see progress on this issue and will monitor the action by the government to fill judicial vacancies. This will improve British Columbians’ ability to access effective justice and increase public confidence in the judicial system.
