Meeting Title/Topic: Mental Health and Substance Abuse in the Courtroom: Walking the Tightrope
Synopsis: Some of the most difficult family files are ones where one or more of the parties are dealing with mental health or substance abuse issues. Those issues may or may not be diagnosed but almost invariably result in erratic behaviour, significant issues relating to the children and unreasonable positions being taken in the context of the proceedings. The speakers at this seminar gave tips on how best to deal with individuals suffering from mental health problems or substance abuse and how best to address these matters in court.

Synopsis: We reviewed dummy financial statements and discussing how to identify issues and what they mean. Issues included large salary/wages component, a large depreciation component that makes the business look unprofitable, a large debt load but good cashflow, large revenues, but thin margins (COGS), large revenues, but high expenses, significant assets but limited cashflow, shareholder loans, and related party loans.
