Meeting Title/Topic: Fairness and Frustration: Obligations of Court and Counsel to Self-Represented Litigants
Synopsis: A brief update on recent caselaw involving self-represented litigants including the recent case of R. v. Wyatt, 2018 BCCA 162 and its precedents, and a review of higher court rulings on the subject and resources to be used by judges in dealing with self-represented litigants. Attendees received some helpful practice suggestions for use in Chambers and at trial. Subjects including a lawyer’s ethical obligations and suggestions for client management were also covered.
