Meeting Title/Topic: Mental Health Detention and Advocacy: Systemic Problems and Solutions
Synopsis: Mr. Fraser and Ms. Johnston will speak about a number of systemic issues relating to Mental Health detention and advocacy in British Columbia, including issues relating to procedural fairness, right to counsel, and the discrimination against involuntarily detained individuals created by BC’s mental health laws.

Meeting Title/Topic: 2017 Health Law in Review
Synopsis: This webinar focussed on key developments and cases relevant to practitioners in 2017, allowing them to stay at the forefront of issues in 2018. Some of the topics discussed included both the government and court’s response to BC’s opioid crisis, legal issues that have emerged as a result of Carter v. Canada, 2015 SCC 5 and the subsequent 2016 amendments to the Criminal Code in regard to medically assisted dying, emerging constitutional concerns with BC’s Mental Health Act, First Nation’s health and federal problems in applying “Jordan’s Principle”, the legal response to sexual assaults at post-secondary institutions, important case law in medical malpractice and personal injury law.
