Meeting Title/Topic: Reestablishing a Human Rights Commission in BC
Synopsis: The new Provincial Government very recently announced that it will reestablish a Human Rights Commission in the province. Parliamentary Secretary Ravi Kahlon has been tasked with leading the public consultation process, including with stakeholders and experts, to learn what a renewed Human Rights Commission could look like, and then to report back and make recommendations to Attorney General David Eby. This meeting rovided an opportunity to hear directly from Parliamentary Secretary Ravi Kahlon and give face-to-face feedback as part of this pivotal consultation process.

Synopsis: Katherine Hardie, counsel for the BC Human Rights Tribunal (counsel for the Appellant before the SCC), and David G. Wong, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP (counsel for the Respondent before the SCC) reviewed the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent decision in British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal v. Schrenk, 2017 SCC 62 and discussed its application and anticipated impact on human rights law.

Synopsis: Steve Adamson and Katherine Hardie are from the BC Human Rights Tribunal, an independent, quasi-judicial body responsible for accepting, screening, mediating, and adjudicating human rights complaints in the province. Steve and Katherine provided the Tribunal’s annual review and update to the Human Rights Law Section.
