The CBABC seeks candidates from which it will appoint its next representative to the Council to Reduce Elder Abuse who will succeed Jackie Morris for a term beginning February 1, 2025 and continuing until December 31, 2026.
CREA is a multi-sector organization established in 2013 to raise awareness about elder abuse and neglect prevention, recognition and response. This is achieved through:
- information-sharing, education and training across sectors,
- convening and hosting dialogues on promising tools and strategies, and,
- if funding is available, maintaining a process for disseminating project funding.
CREA is made up of representatives from various sectors including finance, policing, health, law and community services.
CBABC’s representative on the Council to Reduce Elder Abuse Council is present to bring knowledge of Elder Law and the legal impact of abuse, neglect and self-neglect on society. The representative is expected to attend 3-5 virtual meetings each year. There may be an opportunity to serve on an ad hoc working group or task force as the work evolves. CBABC’s representative may liaise with various Sections within CBABC to provide information to CREA and to share information about initiatives with CBA members.
CBABC’s Board of Directors will select a representative who meets these qualifications:
- CBA member who will maintain membership throughout the term of service
- Minimum 7 years call to the Bar in British Columbia
- Experience in presenting legal information to non-lawyer audiences
- Has knowledge of and experience in navigating elder law concerns including financial and health substitute decision-making as well as protecting seniors from rogue actors
