This Practice Direction directs how counsel, litigants, witnesses and others are to address a judge, associate judge, registrar or district registrar in a courtroom. It also clarifies how parties and counsel can advise the Court, other parties and counsel of their pronouns and form of address.

CBABC is concerned about the recent reporting of a person carrying a firearm into a BC courtroom. In addition, two lawyers defending an accused in a high-profile murder case received threats of violence. These reports should be deeply troubling to all British Columbians.

The Lieutenant Governor recently issued Order in Council 628/2023 amending Section 5 of the Disbursements and Expert Evidence Regulation, BC Reg, 2010/2020.

"In collaboration with the Provincial Court, virtual bail hearings, including electronic document submissions for bail hearings by lawyers, have been successfully expanded and implemented throughout B.C. It is an important measure in the Safer Communities Action Plan."

The Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia branch (CBABC) submitted recommendations to BC’s Attorney General to reform s. 211 of the Family Law Act, calling for standardization of these reports. This submission is part of BC's ongoing initiative to reform the Family Law Act.

CBABC is pleased to see the Legislature has not disputed the 2022 Final Report released by the Judicial Compensation Commission in April 2023, which recommends salary increases for BC Provincial Court judges and judicial justices. 

CBABC congratulates the 2023 recipients of the King's Counsel designation in recognition of their exceptional merit and contribution to the legal profession in British Columbia.

Purpose: To set out the procedure for adjourning matters under the Family Law Act, S.B.C. 2011, c. 25 (FLA) or the Family Maintenance Enforcement Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 127 (FMEA) from one court date to another or to adjourn generally.
