Response from Chief Justice Hinkson: Reforming Court Scheduling

In September, the Court Services Committee of CBABC made a submission to reform court scheduling entitled Modernizing the Supreme Court of British Columbia’s Scheduling System for Civil Matters. The Chief Justice of the BC Supreme Court has considered this submission and provided a letter in response.

The government heard from legal professionals that more time is needed to meet new requirements to file under the Land Owner Transparency Registry, and has extended the deadline an additional year to November 30, 2022.

The recently enacted Land Owner Transparency Act, SBC 2019, c.23 (“LOTA”) requires that certain registered owners of real property interests in British Columbia file initial transparency reports disclosing their interest holders by November 30, 2021.

CBABC’s Family Law Working Group has prepared this submission which contains recommendations to modernize the child protection system in BC. Legislative and policy reform is long overdue, and change is needed to protect the most vulnerable in our society. This submission highlights the most critical issues and establishes a plan designed minimize harm to children who are part of this system.

Resolution 1 is a "Member Resolution to Solicit the Membership's Commitment to Open Debate on Practice Directive 59 and Notice to Profession 24 (re Gender Pronouns)". It is the position of CBABC that Resolution 1 is contrary to our mission and values and should be voted down at the Law Society's AGM on Oct 5, 2021.
