Letter to Governor General Designate Mary Simon, OC, OQ

I write to you on behalf of the Aboriginal Lawyers Forum of the Canadian Bar Association BC Branch to extend our sincerest congratulations on your designation as the next Governor General of Canada.

We raise our hands to you, the first Indigenous person appointed to this position, and honour you for your selfless acceptance of the highest level of community service. Your appointment as Governor General is so well deserved and we thank you for your years of tireless advocacy for the betterment of Canada as a whole and for Indigenous people specifically.

The CBABC Aboriginal Lawyers Forum is a networking and mentoring forum for Indigenous law students, articling students, lawyers and judges. It is through the Aboriginal Lawyers Forum that our volunteers, members, and supporters address the retention of lndigenous people in the legal profession and support and enhance the stature and influence of Indigenous people in the legal profession. We also contribute to the CBABC’s advocacy on indigenous justice issues, and promote reconciliation and Indigenous cultural competency within the legal community.

In conclusion we write to show our wholehearted support of your appointment. It is a proud a day for Inuit and Indigenous people across Canada.
