The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch expressed deep disappointment today that BC Budget 2024 does not include appropriate provisions for legal aid to help the most vulnerable in our province. 

British Columbia will expand legal aid coverage and open a new family law clinic focused on survivors of intimate partner violence.

The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch celebrates today’s announcement of a $29.1 million investment to improve legal aid services for survivors of intimate partner violence and hopes to see more to support British Columbians with common legal issues such as child support or parenting agreements.

Canadian Bar Association BC Branch is seeking a CBABC Provincial Council member to join the Board of Directors. The CBABC Board of Directors is responsible for advancing the CBA’s mission in British Columbia, ensuring the necessary resources for branch operations, and overseeing the outcomes of the advocacy, programs, services and activities of CBABC.

CBABC is concerned about the recent reporting of a person carrying a firearm into a BC courtroom. In addition, two lawyers defending an accused in a high-profile murder case received threats of violence. These reports should be deeply troubling to all British Columbians.

The Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia branch (CBABC) submitted recommendations to BC’s Attorney General to reform s. 211 of the Family Law Act, calling for standardization of these reports. This submission is part of BC's ongoing initiative to reform the Family Law Act.
