On behalf of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Honourable Leonard Marchand on his historic appointment as the Chief Justice of British Columbia and Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of Yukon.
Chief Justice Marchand is Syilx and a member of the Okanagan Indian Band. His appointment marks a significant moment in Canadian history, as he becomes the first Indigenous Chief Justice of a Court of Appeal in the country.
As a judge and justice, Chief Justice Marchand is widely respected for his exceptional judgment, compassion and modesty. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he dedicated a significant portion of his career to advancing reconciliation for Indigenous peoples. His experience will contribute immensely to the administration of justice in B.C.
