Statement from CBABC President Patricia Blair on DRIPA implementation

April 14, 2026

The Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch supports the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act as a cornerstone of British Columbia’s commitment to Reconciliation and to the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Implementing Section 3 of DRIPA is complex work that must be undertaken transparently, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and with adequate, sustained funding to ensure it is done effectively. These priorities are set out in CBABC’s Agenda for Justice 2025.

As we have previously stated, any consideration of changes to DRIPA must not limit access to the courts or undermine the role of the judiciary. Courts play a vital role in interpreting the law and safeguarding rights. Getting DRIPA implementation right will strengthen public confidence, advance Reconciliation and uphold the rule of law in British Columbia.
