Career Starters Mentorship | CBA British Columbia

More than ever, early career lawyers tell us they are looking for mentorship opportunities and would like “a mentor who is like me”. This might include area of practice, work environment, race, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Career Starters Mentorship offers lawyers with less than 10 years of call an opportunity to be matched with a mentor based on their priority criteria. Articling students or law graduates seeking articles are also eligible for this program. We ask detailed questions to achieve a higher level of compatibility and a meaningful connection.

Enrollment for 2025-26 is open. Apply by October 6.

Time Commitment

Participants in this program are expected to connect in person or virtually at least once per month during the 10 month mentoring relationship.

Mentors are expected to be reasonably available by email or phone should their mentee reach out with questions or to schedule a meeting.
Mentor Requirements

Mentors must be CBABC members and may be practicing, non-practicing or retired members of the Law Society of BC.

It is recommended that Mentors have at least five years of call. Those with less are encouraged to mentor in the Law School Mentorship Program.

Although mentees are expected to initiate contact, mentors can be proactive by giving their mentee extra opportunities to connect. For example, mentors might invite mentees to CBABC or other industry events or programming.
Mentee Requirements

This program is primarily intended for early career lawyers with less than 10 years of call.

Mentees must be CBABC members and may be practicing or non-practicing members of the Law Society of BC or enrolled as articling or NCA students.

Mentees are expected to initiate contact with their mentor. Mentees should be specific with their mentors about what they hope to achieve through this mentoring relationship.

Mentors can receive up to six Continuing Professional Development Credits for mentoring a lawyer and double if they mentor two, subject to conditions of the Law Society of BC.
