Sophie Chen & Noah Escandor
In September 2025, Sophie Chen used this robe for her call ceremony. She and her partner, Noah Escandor, contacted CBABC’s Robe Bank after spending their law school journey together at the University of Victoria. With Sophie now working in a non-profit and Noah at a trade union, the couple had both decided to pursue law from a desire to help people.
"It was nice having each other to stay grounded to our principles and our values during law school," Sophie said. Together, they ran the University of Victoria's racialized law students club, where students can come together and support each other.
1L was tough, at times. If one of them contemplated dropping out of law school, the other would offer support. Luckily, Noah joked that they never felt like quitting at the same time. "Thankfully, it never overlapped."
Because both now practice in areas that don't frequently need lawyers to wear robes, Robe Bank allowed them to get outfitted for the call ceremony, where both of their families flew in from across Canada and the U.S. to cheer them on.
"Without Robe Bank, I might not have done the call ceremony to be honest, so it's very nice to have this option and be able to participate in the call ceremony and have our family there," Noah said.
